During 1988-2013, of 5286 deaths in 17,628 kidney transplant recipients, 934(17.8%) were cardiac. Kidney transplant recipients had greatly increased risk of cardiac mortality compared to the general population, but this has improved over time. Although male recipients have higher absolute risk, female recipients have a much higher excess risk of cardiac death relative to males suggesting cardiac risks may be under-recognized, and/or prevention and treatment interventions either less accessed, less effective or more harmful in females with kidney failure.
